Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and
assurance about what we do not see. Hebrews
11:1
Faith is confidence.
The original Greek word is hypostasis, which means:
• underlying reality
• the steadfastness of mind, firmness, courage, resolution, confidence,
• firm trust, assurance, that which has foundation, is firm, that which has actual existence
In what we hope for
• What had KatieLyn been hoping for? A husband who loved
her.
And assurance about what we do
not see.
• KatieLyn could not see herself married. A week earlier I had asked her if she was seeing it, if she had felt the reality of it yet. She never answered me. She had no confidence or
assurance. Who or what damaged her faith?
• Why would she believe that Joe would grow to resent her? That
was the 'reason' she gave for thinking that the marriage would not work.
I have to admit, giving that reason was a brilliant strategy. I had not
realized that she had it in her! And to this day, I am not sure that she did; (it
could have been an outside thought planted by another crafty mouth.) But
KatieLyn was the one who said it. It was a brilliant move because now, no matter what,
it is Joe's fault and she is off the hook when it comes to taking any responsibility,
in fact, she gets to be the heroine!
All her friends who never met Joe were telling her that she
is courageous and brave! Meanwhile, Joe's friends who had met KatieLyn were
asking 'what is she thinking!?!'
She has set it up so
that she can claim she "knew it wouldn't work" should any additional
negative thing happen now. And if things go well, she can say that she
"knew someone else would make him happier." See how that works? Maybe
she can get a crystal ball and set up shop as a seer, because whether fortune
is good or bad, she has a prediction that fits!
The New Living Translation puts Hebrews 11:1 this way: Faith
is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us
assurance about things we cannot see.
KatieLyn was a faithless bride.
And according to both Hebrews 10:38 and 11:6, God was not pleased.
